Q?

How Can I Maintain a Beautiful Floor?

A.

Wood floors are durable and easy to take care of with a little effort. We highly advise our clients to use a spray bottle with a water and white vinegar mixture to clean the floors. Put two (2) cups of water into the bottle and one ounce (1 oz.) of white vinegar.

It is important that you don’t drench your floor! Spray a small amount of the mixture on your mop and “near dry” mop the floor. Excessive water can cause the wood to warp and swell. Vinegar and water is of course organic and non-toxic. Good for kids and pets!
And for those muddy days here at Beautiful Traditions we recommend adding a little drop of liquid Ivory soap to the mixture. It's gentle on the floors and can help take out tougher soiling. But again the important thing is DO NOT DRENCH your mop or your dust mop. Excessive water is not your floors’ friend. If water spills on a wood floor immediately wipe it up with a clean cloth. Standing water can dull or discolor the finish.

Are Over The Counter Cleaning Products Better to Clean Wood Floors With?

A.

We don’t recommend using fancy floor cleaners. One reason is if you use commercial products it can leave a residue on your floors than can leave it dull over time. Also if you decide to wax the floor at some point the wax might not adhere because of the cleaning product you used. This would mean that your floors would need to be refinished to take the film off. How Can I Protect Wood Floors from Scratches?

A.

One thing you can do is to place mats and throw rugs at doorways or in high traffic areas. These can help protect wood floors from grit, dirt and sand. Place felt pads under furniture legs and vacuum and dust your wood floor regularly.
